Field Sketch: Cottonwoods

2024; Oil on panel; 8×10. Painted en plein air in May near the Carson Nature Center in Littleton, Colorado. This is one of a series of panels where I’m testing various painting surfaces (gesso-coated MDF board, canvas MDF board, gesso-coated canvas MDF board, etc). Probably more detail than you want to know. But surface makes a difference when painting. In this particular panel (gesso-coated MDF board), the paint easily slides around the surface allowing for interesting gesture marks. But it’s easy to scrape off all those marks, too, exposing the underlying surface.
