Rollin Barnard Park, Greenwood Village, CO

2024. Gouache on paper. 6×8.

I belong to the Plein Air Artists of Colorado. We typically paint together each week at locations around the Denver metro area. On Jan 9, 2024, we wednt to Rollin D. Barnard Equestrian Park in Greenwood Village, CO. This is another small oasis of natural habitat barely 10 miles from my home in Denver.

Big Dry Creek, a small stream, runs through the park. On this morning, the creek picked up warm notes of the sandy bottom despite remnants of recent snow. I was focused on combining the darks of the water in shadow against the warm tones in the shallower portions of the stream. Denver’s snow tends to melt quickly given the intense sunshine we regularly get. So finding these scenes is a pleasure – especially so close to my home. I hope to return and paint here again soon.
